Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro rises from the dry plains, through a wide belt of forest and high alpine heath to an almost bare desert and finally the snow capped summit, Uhuru Peak, just 3 degrees south of the Equator exactly at the Kenya / Tanzania border, the northern foot of the mountain stretching down to Amboseli National park on Kenya side.

This magical mountain capped with white snow is composed of three extinct Volcanoes namely Kibo 5895 m (19340 ft), Mawenzi 5149 m (16896 ft.), and Shira 3962 m (13000 ft.); the most popular peaks are Kibo and Mawenzi. To climb Mt Kilimanjaro there 6 different routes Marangu Route being the easier and the most popular, followed by Machame, Rongai, Shira, Umbwe and Mweka. To climb Mt Kilimanjaro takes 4 nights to 6 nights depending which route is used. The two most popular routes are Marangu and Machame. On the Marangu route accommodation is provided in huts while on Machame Route it is camping throughout. Expert guides and porters, A MUST to accompany you on your climb.

Brayogo Safaris Safaris organizes two types of climb:

(a) Fully equipped Climbs
African Game Walk Safaris arranges hut bookings, guides and porters, bedding and equipment, and catering on the mountain. Climbers are expected to bring all necessary warm clothing, although the Tour leader will make good any shortfalls where possible at no extra charge. Our guides/ tour leader undertakes each climber's mountain packing to ensure that nothing is omitted.

(b) Hard Way Climbs

This alternative type of safari involves climbers bringing all their own food and equipment, and catering for themselves on the climb. The hotel arranges a guide and two porters per climber as well as booking hut accommodation. Further porters may be arranged upon request. Please note that the guide requires his own porter.

Required Equipment
All climbers should attempt to bring as much as possible of the following: Anorak/parka, mittens, balaclava, snow goggles or ski sunglasses, scarf, 3 pairs warm trousers, sweaters, 6 pairs warm socks, thermal underwear, waterproof layer, sun proof hat, comfortable boots, sun cream, small first aid kit, knapsack and water bottle. Suggested medicines: headache tablets (preferably not aspirin since this tends to irritate stomachs already sensitive at altitude), Imodium/Lomotil for diahorrea sometimes associated with altitude. Climbers may like to consult their physicians about azetazolomide (Diamox); a drug that many find mitigates the ill effects of altitude, headache, diahorrea & vomiting.

We will attempt to make up any shortfalls in equipment at no extra charge. Climbers arriving on KLM, in particular, are advised to try to bring as much as possible of the above as cabin baggage since baggage is frequently delayed. Climbers might, for example, wear their boots on the plane.
