Welcome
to Kenya
Kenya, a republic in East Africa, is a member of the
Commonwealth of Nations. Kenya has a varied landscape
of plateaus and high mountains and is home to many different
ethnic groups. Formerly a British colony, Kenya gained
independence in 1963 and has been a republic since 1964.
It is bounded on the north by Sudan and Ethiopia, on
the east by Somalia and the Indian Ocean, on the south
by Tanzania, and on the west by Lake Victoria and Uganda.
Nairobi is the country’s capital and largest city.
Kenya's
Landscapes
Kenya's landscapes are rich in diversity. Almost every
known landform exists here in miniature, from snow-clad
mountain and glaciers to arid deserts, from dry Savannah
to lush lakes and dense forest. The Great Rift Valley,
its floor littered with lakes and extinct volcanoes,
cuts though Kenya from north to south. On the equator
majestic Mount Kenya (5,199m) with its snow-capped peaks
rises above endless grassland plains. To the north is
the rugged and remote northern frontier district including
lake Turkana, "The jade sea". The famous Masai
Mara reserve to the southwest is the northern extension
of the Serengeti. To the south, the Indian Ocean coast
offers sandy white beaches, and turquoise seas protected
by a fascinating coral reef. Above all there is the
wildlife.
Getting There
Kenya is well served by major international airlines,
which fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi)
or Moi International Airport (Mombassa). Yellow Fever
and Cholera vaccinations are required only for visitors
arriving from countries where these diseases are endemic.

the Muslim community
